Turkey Citizenship by Marriage
Our Turkish Citizenship Lawyers are ready to apply for citizenship with general terms. Apart from these options for investors; please note that Turkey is still very conservative in its citizenship applications.
According to Turkish Nationality Act No.5901, a foreign applicant should meet the following requirements in order to apply for Turkish nationality (excluding the exceptions provided with the new amendments for investor immigrants):
Foreigners are eligible to stay in Turkey for longer terms and/or become Turkish citizens upon marriage to a Turkey citizen. For becoming eligible for citizenship, the foreigner and the Turkish citizen shall be married for at least three (3) years.
If you are married to a Turkish citizen for at least 3 years and your marriage is sustaining, you can apply for Turkish citizenship. If your spouse dies after your application, the requirement of unity of the family has no need anymore.
Foreigners who fulfill the conditions stated in Article 16 regarding obtaining the Citizenship Law by marriage can apply for citizenship.
According to Article 16 of the Turkish Nationality Act No.5901, “Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship by marriage”, Turkish citizenship shall not be obtained automatically upon marriage.
The law states to apply for citizenship; the foreign applicant needs to be married to a Turkish citizen for at least 3 years and continue to be married.
Acquiring citizenship is also contingent upon the following criteria. You and your spouse:
- Must be living together as a family unit
- Should refrain from engaging in acts in violation of your marriage union (such as prostitution, multiple partners, etc.)
- Should not pose any threat to national security and public order or engage in unethical behavior.
If your Turkish spouse dies after you file your citizenship application, you can still go through it. If you were married for many years and never got round to applying for citizenship and your Turkish spouse died, you still have the right to apply for citizenship several years later your spouse’s death.
If you happen to have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least 3 years, acquired citizenship, and then got divorced, you will not lose your citizenship.
However, if authorities deem you were in bad faith or had a plan when marrying and were not serious about having a family union, you may lose your Turkish citizenship.
Filing Application for Turkey Citizenship by Marriage

- Preliminary examination form (a standard form VAT-6)
- Notarized Turkish translation of the passport
- Identity registry copy of the applicant

- Valid residence permit obtained through the process above outlined
- Receipt slip for the application service charges made
